program  includes:

Skills2Advance Home Building provides students with an opportunity to try a trade through an introduction to carpentry, plumbing and exterior finishing (windows, doors, soffit, facia, siding, eves) trades. Classes will be offered at Conestoga College Tollgate Campus in Brantford, Ontario.

Successful completion of the program will earn participants many certifications including: Certificate of Completion micro-credential, forklift license, Standard First Aid with CPR-C, Elevated Work Platforms, Working at Heights, Health and Safety and more! 

 

The program will also include a paid 8-week workplace placement with the potential to lead to employment and apprenticeship.

Program Details

12 Weeks Training

• Health & safety

• Introduction to general carpentry, plumbing and exterior finishing (windows, doors, soffit, facia, siding, eves)

• Basics of skilled trades math and blueprint reading

• Hand and power tool use

• Standard First Aid with CPR-C

• Forklift License

• Working at Heights

• Elevated Work Platforms

• Literacy & basic skills upgrading

• Workshops on resume writing, interview skills, mental health, workplace culture, financial literacy and more!

8 Weeks Placement

• Paid placement by employer

• Required placement starts after training is complete (dates can vary)

• Full-time, up to 40 hours per week

• Wages range starting at minimum wage

• Staff will assist you in finding a placement but students are also required to job search on their own

• Placements could lead to employment and/or apprenticeship and better quality of life

• Placement/Job positions vary, see potential careers for more info

• All students must complete a placement to the best of their ability

After the Training & Placement

Skills2Advance will support you in:

Finding employment in the construction industry

Finding apprenticeship resources

Pursuing further training & education

Training Dates

All training for Skills2Advance Home Building is at Conestoga College Tollgate Campus, 112 Tollgate Rd, Brantford, ON N3R 4Z6.

Cohort 1

September 8 - November 27, 2026

+ 8-week work placement

Cohort 2

October 19 - January 22, 2026 *break for Christmas holidays

+ 8-week work placement

Who’s Eligible

• 16+ years old

(If you are 16 or 17 years old you must have a high school diploma or equivalent )

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Exceptions will be reviewed on an individual basis


• Legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, Refugee/Protected Person)

• Has reliable transportation to attend training locations on specified dates

• Lives in one of the following areas: Brantford, Brant, Norfolk, Haldimand, Six Nations, The Credit, Hamilton, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo & Oxford

• Must be ready to work full-time in construction industry

• Self-identify as either a youth (age 16-29), female, low-income, person with a disability, barriered, Indigenous, Racialized Person or  2SLGBTIQA+

• Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Able to crouch, kneel, stoop, bend
• Manual dexterity ability

• • Comfortable with digital technology (computer, phone etc.)

•    Able to stand for up to 8 hours a day and perform physically demanding tasks regularly

•    Able to commit to different working shifts


•    Able to work for a wage between minimum wage $17.60 and $25 approximately an hour
