Skills2Advance Mechanics provides students with an introduction to the world of auto mechanics including service technician, auto body and heavy equipment trades. Partnering with Conestoga College, the Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie (WPBGE) will offer 1 class of 24 people in Brantford, Ontario.

The program will focus on serving women, Indigenous People, Youth, Marginalized Youth and Recent Immigrants/Newcomers.  Successful completion of the program will earn participants many certifications including a Certificate of Completion micro-credential, forklift license, Standard First Aid with CPR-C, Working at Heights, Health and Safety and more! 

 

The program will also include a paid 8-week workplace placement with the potential to lead to employment and apprenticeship.

Program Details

24 Weeks Training

• Health & safety

• Computer applications and blueprints

• Trade mathematical calculations calculations
• Auto, heavy duty equipment and truck and coach theory and Practice 
• Welding theory and practical 

• Standard First Aid with CPR-C

• Forklift License

• Working at Heights

• Literacy & basic skills upgrading

• Workshops on resume writing, interview skills, mental health, workplace culture, financial literacy and more!

8 Weeks Placement

• Paid placement by employer

• Required placement starts after training is complete (dates can vary)

• Full-time, up to 40 hours per week

• Wages range (minimum wage and up)

• Staff will assist you in finding a placement, you are also required to job search

• Placements could lead to employment and/or apprenticeship and better quality of life

• Placement/Job positions vary, see potential careers for more info

• All students must complete a placement to graduate

After the Training & Placement

Skills2Advance will support you in:

Finding employment in the skilled trades

Registering as an apprentice

Pursuing further training & education

Training Dates

All training is at Six Nations Polytechnic Campus, 411 Elgin St, Brantford.

2024 classes are full. Join the waitlist by filling out an application. Future class dates are dependent on funding.

Who’s Eligible

• 16+ years old

(If you are 16 or 17 years old you must have a high school diploma or equivalent )

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Exceptions will be reviewed on an individual basis


• Legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, Refugee)

• Has reliable transportation to attend training locations on specified dates

• Lives in one of the following areas: Brantford, Brant, Norfolk, Haldimand, Six Nations, The Credit, Hamilton, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo & Oxford

• Must be ready to work full-time in the skilled trades

• Self-identify as either a youth (age 16-29), female, newcomer/immigrant or Indigenous

• Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Able to crouch, kneel, stoop, bend
• Manual dexterity ability

• Comfortable with basic computer                 functionality
